I used to feel pretty lonely, when it came to DJing. There have never been all that many women who took on DJing for any extended period of time around here, or anywhere. There are certainly some excellent women spinning (like DJ Shortee, Mama Miche, DJ Tereza) but it’s still pretty uncommon.
Which is why I decided to change that a couple years ago.
In 2012, I started my DJ Academy for All Women. I include the word “All” to cover the breadth of what the term woman can mean: anyone who identifies as a woman can join the DJ course.
So far we’re in our fourth season of the school and about 55 students have been through the beginner class. I feel really excited and proud to see that now other women are beginning to invest in their own DJ equipment and to independently take on gigs.
This season’s students are nearing the end of their course and, as is tradition, we’ll be holding a “graduation dance party” to celebrate. All are welcome to come out and support the DJ students as they step onto the stage and play their first gig in public! There will be 15 brand new female DJs performing — I can’t wait!
