Vancouver’s Queen of Sass — Crystal Precious— is coming to Winnipeg!

Crystal Precious is part riot grrl, part burlesque dancer and part rapper. She is the world’s first burlesque/hip hop MC, mixing ghetto-fabulous glamour with fresh quips, razor-sharp rhymes, locally grown beats and a touch of tongue-in-cheek tease. She calls it Striphop. You’ll call it lots of things.

Some of last year’s graduates taking a final bow.

I started a DJ School just over a year ago. It’s not made of bricks and mortar, but it does have students. Last year, I had ten women in the first-ever class and the results were incredibly rewarding. We had a recital and they were brave enough to perform their brand new skills in front of a packed house at Winnipeg’s Lo Pub (R.I.P.). Most of that class has now graduated to this year’s intermediate DJ course and I have a whole new batch of students trying out the beginner class.

In what I’m guessing will become an annual event, the beginners are going to strut their stuff at a dance party on International Women’s Day, with proceeds going toward the West Central Women’s Resource Centre. You are invited to simultaneously have tremendous fun and to support our whole new generation of women and trans DJs!

The staff and volunteers at GAP and Art City are going to be competing in a mind-blowing talent show. In the past, I’ve seen puppetry, vaudeville, rap, painting, tightrope walking… anything’s possible. It’s a talented group of people.

Then, we’re following it up with a dance party with my pal DJ J. Jackson (you may remember him from “I Wanna Dance With Somebody!“) and yours truly!

It’s the basement of Sawatdee Thai restaurant on south Osborne, and the food goes until 4 am upstairs! I will eat so much green curry soup. $5 before 11 pm.

Tomorrow is the Winnipeg Arts Council’s launch party for the new permanent art — “emptyful” and “Sentinel of Truth” — in the Millennium Library Park downtown. I’m honoured the WAC has asked me to DJ at this cool event. Come check it out. Free to everyone!

WHERE: Millennium Library Park, 251 Donald Street

WHEN: Wednesday, August 15, 5:30pm – 11:00pm

WHO: All of Winnipeg! Hosted by the Winnipeg Arts Council, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, and the Winnipeg Public Library

WHAT: Meet the artists of these two remarkable new works. Come enjoy a wine garden, refreshments, tours of the newly renovated park and entertainment from John K. Samson and Veda Hille, the Keith Price Trio, Trio Bembe, DJ Mama Cutsworth, and a “brief” but special performance by Shakespeare in the Ruins. The evening will be hosted by writer & broadcaster Bill Richardson.

WHY: With the opening of the Millennium Library Park, two public artworks have also opened. These artworks, created through the Winnipeg Arts Council, were conceived of and planned as part of the Millennium Library Park from the very beginning of the renovation. emptyful is a new work of art by Vancouver artist Bill Pechet created as the major legacy project of the Winnipeg Cultural Capital of Canada designation. Sentinel of Truth by Winnipeg artist Darren Stebeleski represents libraries as protectors of truth and ideas that stand as pillars of our society.
