September 14th, 2010 marks the precise 25th anniversary of the first-ever airing of the ground-breaking TV show, THE GOLDEN GIRLS.

Spanning seven years, the show took us through the lives of four incredible women in Miami: Dorothy Zbornak, Rose Nylund, Blanche Devereaux and Sophia Petrillo. They had crushes, they had sex, they tap danced. Women over 50 have never been so celebrated in mainstream television, or with such hilarious one-liners.

So let’s honour these girls with a party!

Months ago I was wandering around on the internet, as I do, and I came across a song called “Hometown,” by singer Lady Daisey and her partner in music and love, Batsauce, on the production. I liked it right away, so it ended up on the very next episode of Stylus Radio, my show over on CKUW 95.9 fm. Being modern times where you can just directly contact artists you like, I located Daisey on the ol’ fbook and we found common ground in music and an overall positive outlook on life.

Here’s where it gets cool: months ago I extended the offer that we’d have her do a show here if she could ever make the huge trek across the Atlantic from Berlin to Canada. By total coincidence, she started planning a North American tour to promote her new album In My Pocket, fresh out on BBE Records. Now if you don’t know BBE, this is the label featuring the legendary Gilles Peterson, insane funk digger and king of 45s Keb Darge, DJ Spinna, 4Hero, DJ Vadim, Madlib, Slakah tha Beatchild… and now, LADY DAISEY. Needless to say she’s in good company. Then she happened to be in touch with our pal Grant at Paquin Entertainment about getting a gig up here in the middle of nowhere (i.e. the Canadian prairies) and what do you know, we’re making it happen. On Saturday, September 11th. At the Lo Pub in Winnipeg.

Some come get a dose of some real warm soul music from a pair of talented folks who likely won’t be in this neck of the woods again for a long time. I mean, Berlin isn’t close to here by any means. DJ Hunnicutt and I will be providing a dance soundtrack for the party as well, so you pretty much need to book off the night right now.

Plus, it’s free before 10 pm (and only $5 after), so it’s a risk-free night of delicious music. I can’t wait for this show!

I’m happy to say that next week I have the honour of not only DJing, but co-hosting the Canada Day celebrations at the Forks in Winnipeg! So brave the crowds and head to the Scotiabank Stage to catch some great Winnipeg music.

A bit about Aloe Blacc:

So Cal native Aloe Blacc began his recording career as an MC back in 1995, when he joined up with hip-hop producer Exile to form the mainstay indie rap group, Emanon. A few years later, Aloe would stow away on a Lootpack European tour and become fast friends with Oh No a relationship which led to many fruitful collaborations as a solo artist.

These days, Aloe Blacc has evolved into a true Renaissance man. Recordings like his Latin cover of John Legend’s “Ordinary People” prove that not only can this multi-instrumentalist produce, rap and sing but he can flip it in Spanish, too. With an amazingly broad set of influences ranging widely from the acoustic guitar stylings of folk artist Cat Stevens, to the soul-stirring sounds of the Negro Spirituals, Aloe prides himself on the spectrum of his musical roots. His sound often forays into the digital R&B realm, but always grooves with a tinge of Latin and the pulse of hip-hop.

Go to this show, if you know what’s good for you.

TV CARNAGE is a wild re-purposing of old television clips into wild montages and smart commentary on the cliches we grew up watching, over and over (like this). It’s also a discovery of the very weird, often found in the far corners of public access TV (like the awkward tone in the beauty pageant in this clip). The brains behind this operation (that has been pumping out gems since the mid-90s) is a fellow by the name of Derrick Beckles, or Pinky, as he’s often known.

Pinky will be coming to The Albert in Winnipeg Friday, June 18, with Mama Cutsworth opening up! The night will feature live TV Carnage screenings, Pinky being Pinky up on stage, a viewing of his new Adult Swim show “Totally For Teens!” (see: Totally For Teens (T4T)!) His new DVD “Let’s Work It Out” will also be for sale.

Doors are at 9pm, admission is only $8. This is a once-in-a-lifetime night of weirdo hilarity.

What’s this battle, you say? We’re having a live PB trivia game show on stage and if you want to be a part of the action, start brushing up on your movie facts and quotes! Show up early that night (between 9-10 pm) to sign up for the game show! Prizes will be won and contestants will be treated humanely. (That’s where we differ from the Princess Bride battle of wits… “The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we both drink, and find out who is right… and who is dead.”)

Also, there will be prizes for best PB costume, although you needn’t dress up if you don’t want to. I’m not gonna force anyone.
